BBQ Road Trip Day 2: Memphis

Continuing our quest for authentic BBQ, we stopped next in one of the capitals of barbecue: Memphis, Tennessee.

Then we headed to dinner at the Blues City Cafe on Beale Street, Memphis’ answer to Bourbon Street in New Orleans. I couldn’t remember the last time I had ribs – so I really dug into my meal. So much so that I forgot to take a true “before” photo. Anyway, there are two restaurants that are renowned for their “Memphis-style” barbecue.  Rendezvous is the more famous, but locals we talked to said that Blues City Café is the one that they prefer, so that’s where we went.

If you’re not a barbecue connoisseur (I’m still learning, myself), Memphis-style BBQ is known for its sweet, thick molasses-based sauce and pork ribs or pulled pork shoulder (vs. beef), which is served with a mayonnaise-based, creamy coleslaw.

Before our dinner, I had been craving ice cream, but afterward, I was too stuffed to even think about dessert. And the fact that it was 99 degrees and sunny (at 7:30pm!) made my stomach feel even fuller.  Ooops.  But at least it was a meal to remember.
