Material inspiration from John Robshaw

11 Jun

No trip to New York City is complete without a stop at ABC Home.  No matter what one’s decorating tastes, there’s something for everyone at ABC.  Although not necessarily for every budget – which is why I go to collect inspiration.

I bought a chaise lounge recently (at an occasional sale, of course!) and must get it recovered (it’s devastatingly ugly).  I’m shopping around for ideas about what direction to go for upholstery.  Solid?  Stripes?  Neutral?  Bright?  Pattern?

I’ve long been obsessed with Indian and Central Asian textiles and thought this bench in the John Robshaw corner at ABC Home was divine….

I’m not committed – yet – to using a bright, exotic pattern, but I’m strongly considering it….

Shoe Sale Stalemate

8 Jun

Shopping update from New York: summer sales have started!  Although it’s only the first mark-down of the season, most of the shoes at Barneys, Saks, Bergdorf, etc. are marked down 30-40%.  The good news is that I haven’t spent a fortune.  The bad news is that I haven’t spent a fortune because I’ve hardly found anything to buy.  Here is a sad journal of my trip through Barneys shoe department, a stop at Zara, and later, through the Century 21 shoe department.

Barneys’ sale racks: this is the style that I’m going for – strappy, gladiator-type sandals.

Ann Demeulemeester: Too high an incline and too many straps on my legs.

Givenchy: I love the straps, but again, the heel is too high.

Not sure who designed these: I love the fuchsia and the stacked heel, but it’s STILL too high.

At Zara: very cute (and well-priced) wedge sandals. Again, too high for me.

Chloé shoes

Chloé blue leather wedges: the height is right, but they don’t have my size.

grey Chloé wedges

Chloé grey patent wedges: not my favorite color, but these could work.

Modeling the grey pair: the perfect heel for me!  Sadly, they only have one pair, which are a half-size too big.

Don’t cry for me just yet: I did manage to find a Carven cotton dress (on sale!) that fits like a dream : )

Have a great weekend!

Spotted: Cool Jewelry Display Case

7 Jun

As a jewelry obsessive, I’m constantly on the look-out for great jewelry storage options.  I found this one on the contemporary floor at Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC.  I like it because it’s glass on 3 sides and has a uniformly shaped and colored and narrow frame – this spotlights the jewelry, rather than the case, itself – but also has exuberantly bowed legs, lending it some elegance.  Bellissimo!

Sorry the photo is a bit blurry.  One is not technically supposed to take any pictures in the store….(Don’t tell!)

ABC Home (photo: abchome.com)

forgive me for a smidge of shameless self-promotion…my guide to NYC jewelry shopping came out on the just-launched CityPath.  Check it out:

And just one note:  The 26th Street Flea Market is only open on Saturdays & Sundays, as it is held inside a working (Mon-Fri) parking garage.  (Access is on 26th & 27th Streets b/w 6th & 7th Avenues, closer to 6th Ave.)
